The University of California, Merced, has been awarded the 2012 Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes.

Chancellor Dorothy Leland of the University of California, Merced, has issued the following statement on recent protest incidents at other UC campuses:

“Free speech and nonviolent protest have an honored place in American society and on college and university campuses. In light of recent incidents on several sister University of California campuses, I met last week with senior leadership to review our protocol for managing protests on campus and to plan for a campus teach-in related to the concerns of the Occupy movement.

UC Merced graduate student Brandi McKuin recently returned from a trip to India, where she spent time studying the energy needs of rural villages that have been told by their government that they’ll never get electricity.

UC Merced received its first visit by a U.S. senator Wednesday, as Sen. Barbara Boxer met with Chancellor Dorothy Leland, learned about the work of the Sierra Nevada Research Institute (SNRI), interacted with faculty and student researchers and spoke to a select group of students and news media.

With a proven record of building universities, UC Merced Chancellor-Designate Dorothy Lelandis prepared to lead the campus through its next phase of development by growing its academic and research profile.

UC Merced employees have established themselves here in every way during the last several years, including giving their time and expertise to community organizations. Several employees serve prominently in some of Merced's most vital service groups.

A group of UC Merced's researchers will focus their expertise on the campus in an effort to determine what can be done to ensure the university has a diverse faculty as it continues to grow.

Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) is a fast-growing, global nonprofit network of about 4,000 students, faculty and professionals dedicated to building a sustainable world for current and future generations by way of collaborative, interdisciplinary engineering projects.
