The department's mission is to provide recreation and athletic opportunities for our students to lead healthy, engaging lifestyles that enhance student success, promote individual well-being, and foster a commitment to lead and serve the community.
Being a part of the action is an important part of the UC Merced experience. UC Merced Athletics features 12 NCAA Division II varsity teams and provides an energetic experience for student-athletes and fans alike. Bobcat Nation is truly special. Students also regularly participate in dozens of intramural, club sport, fitness activities, and outdoor activities.
UC Merced Athletes competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The campus sponsors 12 varsity sports including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s water polo.

The Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation and Wellness Center and the Student Activities and Athletics Center feature a full complement of fitness programming along with cardiovascular machines, strength-training equipment and drop-in recreational activities such as basketball, badminton and volleyball. The intramural sports and sport club programs also provide structured recreational opportunities including offerings such as soccer, basketball, archery and much more. You’ll find it all, plus a recreation field and a pool!
Students, faculty and staff members can explore the great outdoors through the Outdoor Experience Program, which offers trips for all skill levels throughout the year. With UC Merced’s close proximity to Yosemite National Park and the coast, day trips are popular.
