5K Run to Support Scholarships, Celebrate Campus Anniversary

The UC Merced Alumni Association and Athletics and Recreation will host the inaugural UC Merced Journey 5K Fund Run on Sept. 5 to celebrate the campus’s 10th anniversary.

Current students, staff and faculty members, alumni and community members are invited to participate. All proceeds from the run will support student scholarships. The goal is to raise $2,500, which will be matched 3-to-1.

Campus to Host Community Forum on Growth Plans

UC Merced Chancellor Dorothy Leland and members of her leadership team will hold a forum to provide community members with an update on the 2020 Project and university facilities to be located in downtown Merced. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, in the California Room on campus.

“This is an opportunity for our local community members to learn about our growth plans both on campus and in the community,” said Cori Lucero, executive director of governmental and community relations. “We hope many people will attend and bring questions they may have for us.”

CARE Office Moves to New Location in Library

CARE Office logoThe Campus Advocacy, Resources and Education (CARE) Office has moved to a new location in the Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library, Room 107. Students and staff and faculty members are invited to an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 10.

Student Teams Win Cash Prizes at Innovate to Grow

The winners of this year’s Innovate to Grow competition have been announced.

The event includes three components: The Mobile App Challenge, the Capstone competition for senior Innovation and Design Clinic teams and the Engineering Service Learning competition for undergraduate teams.

Two prizes are given for Capstone teams. The winners receive $1,000 each — up to $5,000 or $6,000 per team, depending on the number of students on the winning teams.  

The winning Engineering Service Learning team shares $3,000, while Mobile App winners share $5,000.

Children’s Opera Series Returns for Sixth Year

Thousands of area children will attend performances of “Who Stole B-Flat?” on the UC Merced campus this week as part of an effort to expose Merced County youth to opera and theater. 

In addition to the free performances being offered to schools all week, a performance for the community is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the Dr. Lakireddy Auditorium. Suggested donations for the public performance are $5 for adults and $3 for children. 

Campus to Mark Milestone with 10th Graduating Class

When students walk across the stage at this weekend’s commencement ceremonies at the University of California, Merced, they will join the nearly 4,000 scholars who have earned degrees from the university, while marking yet another campus milestone as the campus’s 10th graduating class.

Campus Celebrates Earth Day in a Big Way

With a carnival, movie and other events, this year’s Earth Day festivities are shaping up to be bigger, more fun and more educational than ever.

UC Merced’s annual celebration of the 45-year-old day of observance is always a big deal on this green campus. But this year, the new Earth Day Planning Committee has built on the popular annual recycling-themed carnival and tabling event to include a movie night, a poetry slam, sustainability initiatives proposed by students and more.
