Looking for a Civil Engineering College? Learn More About UC Merced

Civil engineering consists of the preparation, design, building, and operation of the industrial framework systems and services that support our societies; it is the oldest engineering profession and a cornerstone to modern civilization. Civil engineering professionals are commissioned to provide work for the provision of water, power, and transportation systems, clean air and water, and planning and building new communities. As a civil engineering major at UC Merced, you will gain hands-on experience from expert faculty who will prepare you for a fulfilling career within the industry.

UC Merced Civil Engineering Program

The Civil Engineering programs at UC Merced train graduates for careers in both private and public organizations in charge of managing air quality, water quality and supply, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, infrastructure, energy systems, public health, and the long-term social, economic, and environmental welfare of our society. Once earned, a bachelors of civil engineering degree can set a good foundation for further study in engineering, earth science, business, management, law, policy, planning, and public health.

The curriculum provides students with a quantitative understanding of the physical, chemical, ecological, economic, and biological principles that govern the quality of our natural and engineered environment and focuses on the design, development, implementation, and assessment of sustainable engineering solutions to society’s complex environmental, social, and technological challenges. Our civil engineering classes teach a holistic or systems approach to problem-solving and emphasizes four areas: (1) Hydrology and water resources, (2) Environmental Engineering, (3) Geomatics, and (4) Sustainable structures.

Research Opportunities

Take advantage of one of the many fields of research that exist within the engineering departments at our university. Between 2020 and 2021, the our departments have won $18.6 million in research awards, allowing faculty and students to conduct research with top of the notch equipment and data recording systems. We pride ourselves on interdisciplinary research between our five other engineering schools (bioengineering, computer science and engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, and mechanical engineering). Be a representative of the civil engineering department and work alongside the amazing students and world class faculty of the other engineering departments to develop solutions to the industrial problems that currently exist in our world.
