Ilan is an applied mathematician who specializes in real-world math applications, such as control of intense laser beams and high-precision measurement of frequency and time. His first area of specialty is in optical clocks, which will be the "fastest" and most accurate means of measuring time in the next five to ten years. Ilan can explain the mathematics as well as the need for increased precision and accuracy in these and other cutting-edge applications.
Ilan is a graduate of Tel Aviv University, with a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics and a Ph. D. in Applied Mathematics. He joined the faculty at UC Merced in 2005. Previously, he held a postdoctoral research position in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
