Statement from Steve Kang, Chancellor, about funding support for
medical school development in H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care
for America Act
We are most appreciative of Congressman Dennis Cardoza’s
leadership in ensuring that the San Joaquin Valley benefits from
the national healthcare legislation by advocating for funding for
the development of medical schools in federally designated health
professional shortage areas. The Valley is one of the
fastest-growing regions in the state and deserves the same access
to high-quality healthcare, and a supporting medical school, as
found elsewhere in California. Through the combined efforts of
Congressman Cardoza and Congressman Jim Costa, we continue working
toward attaining the goal of a world-class medical school to serve
the Valley and its residents.
In keeping with our mission to expand access to education for
Valley residents, and to help lift the region’s economy and overall
health, we remain committed to developing a research-based medical
school as funding – both public and private – is secured. By
educating and retaining the next generation of the state’s
physicians, UC Merced will play an important role in enhancing the
long-term health of the region.
