UC Merced undergraduate students can find opportunities to conduct research in a lab as early as their freshman year — what’s less common is getting that research funded.
 

Sustainable Food Service Leader Speaking on Campus

Fedele Bauccio, CEO and co-founder of Bon Appétit Management Company, will speak on campus early next month at an event sponsored by the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability, Dining Services, the Blum Center and the Karen Merritt Writing Program.

The event is free and open to all, and begins at 1:30 p.m. March 17 in the California Room.

Bauccio is visiting campus as part of the Sustainability Speaker Series. This year’s theme is food, in keeping with UC President Janet Napolitano’s Global Food Initiative.

Arts Meets Social Justice With Recycled Figures

Students in Richard Gomez’s Arts 171: Art for Social Change course have had a special role in the Yosemite Facelift, an annual project that focuses volunteers on cleaning up Yosemite National Park in late September after its busy season. This year, nearly 1,500 volunteers spent almost 9,700 work hours collecting 14,762 pounds of litter and other waste from the park over six days.
