This year's Commencement happens on May 18th. We are profiling many of our graduates on our Web site, so check back often to meet more of them.

Joshua Bolin

Name: Joshua S. Bolin

Age: 23
Hometown: Yuba City, CA
Major: World Cultures and History

What are your post-graduation plans? Law school!

Where do you want to be in five years? Contributing my efforts toward establishing human rights or environmental treaties at a multi-national level.

How did UC Merced help prepare you for your future? Because attending UC Merced truly is “The Road Less Traveled,” it pushes its students to be leaders, to learn how to respond to situations encountered more in the work/real world setting. But most importantly, we are all working toward building something bigger than ourselves, the type of major achievement opportunity that only those at the top of their professions usually get to experience.

What advice would you offer to incoming students? UC Merced is not for everyone – it is for those ready to work toward a brighter tomorrow based on serving others before one’s self; it is for those ready to initiate new programs, policies and research; and it is for those ready to help lead the Central Valley into an era of positive, rapid change and development. If you think you are that type of person – study hard and be sure to take every opportunity to participate in all that is unique to UC Merced.

Jennifer Wade

Name: Jennifer Wade

Age: 23
Hometown: Merced, CA
Major: Psychology

What are your post-graduation plans? I plan on taking a teeny break from school, find a job, and then start school back up for my master’s and Ph.D.

Where do you want to be in five years? I’d like to be close to finishing grad school, possibly have a fantastic job already or have one in the works.

How did UC Merced help prepare you for your future? UC Merced gave me a lot of opportunities that I wouldn’t have had at any other university. I have also been able to form close relationships with various students and staff that I will personally benefit from for years to come.

What advice would you offer to incoming students? Be prepared!  Don’t think coming into this that it’s going to be a breeze, it actually does take a lot of work.  Also, have fun and get involved in whatever you can, there are lots of opportunities for you here.

Josh Franco

Name: Josh Franco

Age: 21
Hometown: Bellflower, CA
Major: Public Policy

What are your post-graduation plans? This summer, I’ll be part of the UC Sacramento Program, working as an intern for Lt. Gov. John Garamendi Sr.; I’ll continue as the state director of California Students for Barack Obama; and continue to work on Students for the Central Valley.

Where do you want to be in five years? Serving as a public servant, completing my master’s degree in public policy, advocating for systemic change and teaching students about public policy.

How did UC Merced help prepare you for your future? It helped me develop communication, organization, analytical, critical thinking and leadership skills. I also developed relationships with strong-willed, entrepreneurial, adventurous and skilled people, and developed a better understanding of myself, what I care about and why I care about it. UC Merced instilled in me a sense that I can change the world.

What advice would you offer to incoming students? Challenge yourself by getting involved and making a difference. Connect with others and establish life-long friendships. Expect the absolute most and best of yourself. Stand up for what you believe in.

Geneva Rangel

Name: Geneva Rangel

Age: 23
Hometown: Fresno, CA
Major: History

What are your post-graduation plans? I want to become involved in museum work for a year, and then go to graduate school to pursue a higher history degree. I also plan to read the last Harry Potter book this summer and move to San Francisco.

Where do you want to be in five years? I’d like to be in L.A, working at The Getty Museum, and owning a car – finally.

How did UC Merced help prepare you for your future? UC Merced required that history majors serve internships for a semester; this program encouraged me to work at the Historical Museum of Merced, which sparked my interest in museum work. The involvement in the community and the professors at UC Merced helped prepare me for future career goals.

What advice would you offer to incoming students?Do not hesitate on becoming involved in the school simply because you do not see anything that would interest you. Getting involved can be on your terms – whatever you are interested in, like starting the Classic Film Club.

Larry Johnson

Name: Larry Johnson

Age: 21
Hometown: Irvine, CA
Major: Biological Sciences

What are your post-graduation plans? UC Irvine Cancer Center for research, and I am applying to medical school.

Where do you want to be in five years? I hope to be doing my final year of medical school, wherever that is.

How did UC Merced help prepare you for your future? UC Merced has pushed me to take risks. I learned to build up enough courage to meet new people. I also am prepared to work as a team to achieve one common goal.

What advice would you offer to incoming students? Don't be scared of not finding people to hang out with. Everyone has the same mindset about not knowing anyone, but there is always someone there to help open up opportunities for many friendships. In my case, Alex Kang was the one who introduced me to many of his friends.
