



UCMAP Programs List
- School-University Partnerships
UC Merced has established unique partnerships
with schools in the San Joaquin Valley.
These School-University Partnerships offer
customized school-centered and professional
development programs to meet the specific
curricular needs of students, teachers
and administrators at selected elementary,
middle and high schools. Partnerships
have been established in Fresno, Merced,
and Kern Counties. New Partnership Programs
are being designed for Stanislaus County
schools.
- Great
Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS)
A professional development program created
by the Lawrence Hall of Science for K-12
teachers of science and math. The focus
is on sharing innovative science and math
teaching techniques with lead teachers
who then return to their own schools to
conduct workshops for their colleagues.
- UC
Merced Writing Project
- Yosemite Institute for Teachers
A three-day residential, academic field
studies program conducted by Berkeley's
Lawrence Hall of Science in Yosemite National
Park for 4-6th grade teachers.
- San Joaquin Valley School Leadership
Institute
A weeklong institute established to strengthen
the leadership and decision-making skills
of school principals and assistant principals
in the region.
- Laser Science Optics in the Classroom
(LSOC)
A professional development program designed
by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
that focuses on exposing K-12 teachers
to curricular ideas in laser science and
optics.
- Promoting Achievement Through Hands-On
Science (PATHS) Program
A science education outreach program that
utilizes retired faculty and scientists
from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
and the Lawrence Hall of Science GEMS
training program to provide curriculum
support to local elementary school teachers
and to conduct science demonstrations
for elementary age students.
- Health Professions Preparatory Academy
The Doctor's Academy at Sunnyside High
School in the Fresno Unified School District
aims to increase the number of underrepresented
K-12 students in Fresno County who are
prepared for health careers. The UC Merced
Office of Academic Programs also supports
programs that link students in partnership
schools to both the Doctor's Academy and
the newly established Jr. Doctor's Academy
for middle school students.
- Summer Session Courses
UC Merced, in close cooperation with UC
Davis, offers undergraduate level courses
for students living in the San Joaquin
Valley. See the Summer Session page for

- Kids
Around the University (KATU)
KATU introduces students to college beginning
at the 4th grade. The program provides
curriculum and training for teachers and
supports students in developing information
materials for peers about college pathways.
- ChemMystery Exhibit from Lawrence Hall
of Science
A hands-on science exhibit for children
of all ages developed at the Berkeley
Lawrence Hall of Science and brought to
the San Joaquin Valley. The ChemMystery
Exhibit is currently open at the Buena
Vista Museum in Kern County
- 1492 Exhibit
A hands-on science exhibit for children
of all ages developed at the UC Berkeley
Lawrence Hall of Science and brought to
the San Joaquin Valley by UC Merced. The
1492 Exhibit is currently open at the
Challenger Learning Center in Merced County.
