The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts at UC Merced Presents "Living Under the Trees," a photo documentary exhibition and associated events.
David Bacon has documented the lives of Mexican indigenous farmworkers in California, and his photo documentary, "Living Under the Trees," will be on display form Sept. 4 through Oct. 22 on the second floor of the Kolligian Library at UC Merced.
People can learn more about the lives of indigenous people from Oaxaca who work in California's fields and make this state their home. Despite often harsh working and living conditions, their dignity, determination, and rich culture is apparent in these photographs.
There will be an opening reception with artist and photojournalist David Bacon, a community panel and a cultural performance by Grupo Folklórico Cultura Se'e Savi beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in The Lantern, in the ground floor of the library at UC Merced.
Also planned: A workshop entitled "Experience Oaxaca," beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the California Room in the dining/housing complex on campus.
Participants will learn more about Oaxaca, Mexico, through presentations about its people, culture and society. Topics will include the conditions in Oaxaca that influence decisions to migrate and the experience of indigenous Oaxacans in California.
