UC Merced Admissions to host Conferences for Valley Students and Educators

MERCED, CA — San Joaquin Valley students and educators will have the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in UC Merced's admissions and academic programs by attending conferences scheduled in Fresno, Modesto and Bakersfield over the coming weeks.

“The Valley's new UC campus at Merced is on the horizon,” said Encarnación Ruiz, UC Merced Director of Admissions. “We are committed to offering unique educational opportunities and will use these conferences to reach out to our key constituents - the region's students and educators.”

UC Merced Update for Educators

Educators, including teachers, principals, and guidance counselors are welcome to attend these informational breakfasts to meet with the University's deans, student affair directors and campus planners.

Attendees will hear first hand about topics ranging from admissions to academic programs, and in turn, University representatives hope to receive input from the educators on how to best reach students throughout the Valley.

All informational breakfasts are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on the following dates:

  • Bakersfield - Wednesday, April 2- Register by calling (661) 861-7955.
  • Modesto - Friday, April 4- Register by calling (559) 241-7474 by March 28.
  • Fresno - Monday, April 7- Register by calling (559) 241-7474 by March 31.

Pathways to UC Merced: A Student and Parent Conference

These special conferences are geared for Valley high school juniors and their parents.

Students will receive a personal evaluation of their UC Merced eligibility and receive key points to help ensure their greatest opportunity for being selected into the new research university. In addition, students and parents will receive information including academic majors, housing, student life, financial aid and other important topics.

High school juniors who are on track with completing their required A-G courses with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA are invited to attend one of the half-day conferences with their parents.

A Student Registration Form must be completed ahead of time and returned to UC Merced's Office of Admissions/Relations with Schools & Colleges, by the deadline. In addition, an unofficial transcript for each registered student must be included with the form.

Once students are registered for the conference, they will be assigned to one of the following sessions:

  • Morning session: 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Afternoon session: 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Bakersfield - Saturday, April 12(registration deadline March 26)
  • Fresno - Saturday, April 26(registration deadline April 11)
  • Modesto - Saturday, May 10(registration deadline April 25)

UC Merced currently employs more than 100 educators and professionals and will welcome its first 1,000 students in fall 2004. The University will serve students in three ways that complement the changing needs of today's society: 1) a residential campus serving 25,000 students when complete; 2) educational centers throughout the San Joaquin Valley; and 3) cooperative agreements with the California Community College system.
