Nestor Oviedo studies the regenerative abilities of planaria, commonly called flatworms. He's seeking to understand why the flatworms can grow new heads and eyes after they're removed. The hope is that they can give insight into fighting cancer and regenerating tissue in humans.
Oviedo speaks English and Spanish, and can talk about the ways scientists are using stem cells to understand what can be done to combat disastrous illnesses.
He received his Ph.D. in 2004 from the University of Utah and did his postdoctoral training at The Forsyth Institute-Harvard Medical School in Boston. He joined UC Merced in July 2009.
