UC Merced’s I Can Read Literacy Initiative, a grant-funded program within the university’s Civic Leadership program, was developed in the fall of 2014 to help combat illiteracy. In partnership with Franklin Elementary School in Merced, UC Merced students and staff volunteers provide one-on-one instruction to struggling readers in kindergarten through second grade.
