Local AARP Supports Student Success with Scholarship

October 9, 2014

UC Merced offers a new scholarship to Merced County high school graduates, thanks to a $25,000 endowment from the local AARP chapter.

The AARP Merced Chapter No. 282 Scholarship Endowed Fund supports undergraduate students at UC Merced who have at least a 3.5 GPA or higher, show financial need and who have supported community service projects. Each scholarship will be at least $1,000 per year.

The chapter decided to establish a scholarship fund in support of its motto, “To Serve, Not to be Served.”

“This scholarship will help local area students with the ever-increasing costs of pursuing higher education,” said Norman Vaughn-Hulbert, president of the local chapter. “It will also facilitate communication and community relations between UC Merced and the City of Merced.”
