Message from Campus Leadership on Today's Incident

November 29, 2011

Nov. 30: Update from Campus Leadership on Tuesday Incident

To all students, faculty and staff:

A suspicious package was reported to the police in the east wing of the Kolligian Library around 8 a.m. today, Nov. 29. UC Merced police responded to the initial call and secured the area, evacuating the building, and the Merced Police Department Bomb Squad arrived shortly thereafter. The bomb squad has removed the device, and the incident is currently under investigation.

The first floor of the library is now open, but the campus store and other floors in the east wing are expected to remain closed through the afternoon. Faculty members with classes in the east wing are working on finding alternate locations for their classes. It is expected that faculty members will contact students by email with more information.

As a precaution, Riggs Ambulance and Cal Fire personnel were on hand, and the library bus turnaround was closed down briefly this morning, as was Ranchers Road. Additionally, alerts were sent out to the campus community via text and email through the UCM Alert system.

More information will be provided as it becomes available. At this time, there is no evidence to indicate any connection between this event and the recent protests on campus and elsewhere.

While this threat was managed without incident, we encourage all members of the campus community to contact the police if they encounter any sort of suspicious situation. Your awareness is an irreplaceable asset in situations like these. If you see anything suspicious, please contact UC Merced police dispatch at 209-228-2677 or police@ucmerced.edu, or you may leave anonymous information at 209-228-8477.

Sincerely,

Keith Alley
