Walkout by Faculty, Unions and Others Slated for Thursday

September 23, 2009

MERCED, CA — September 23, 2009 —Some
members of the University of California faculty have called for a
systemwide walkout by UC instructors on Thursday, Sept. 24, to
protest the budget cuts, layoffs, furloughs and increased fees that
have been implemented in response to the state’s dramatic cuts in
funding for the university. Their call for faculty to “walk out in
defense of public education” has also drawn support from student
organizations and at least one union.

UC Merced is committed to learning, teaching and serving the
people of the San Joaquin Valley, California, the nation, and the
world, through excellence in education, research and public
service. In addition, we respect, support and value the civil and
respectful expression of individual beliefs and opinions as stated
in our Principles of Community.

We do not know how many UC Merced faculty members will choose to
participate in the walkout. We believe the majority of classes will
continue to take place, and departments will continue to serve
students as done throughout the year. All employees are expected to
report to work and meet their job obligations.

Those instructors who choose to participate in the walkout may
offer options for their students to ensure that commitments
outlined in the course syllabus are fulfilled.
