UC Merced Showcases Student Talent at ‘Debut’

April 15, 2009

MERCED - Arts UC Merced Presents “Debut,” an evening of student
performance art on April 23. Beginning at 7 p.m., “Debut” will
feature students showcasing a variety of artistic talent.

Among the performers are Bhangra, an ethnic dance group; FLO,
an a cappella group that was among the very first student
organizations at UC Merced; and a Taiko drum troupe.

The evening will be peppered with a variety of vocal and
instrumental performances, including one by Stella Yu, probably
best known locally as the in-house pianist at the Piano Caffé
on G Street in the El Portal business complex.

According to Gail Benedict, one of the driving forces behind the
creation of Arts UC Merced Presents, prizes will also be awarded to
the event for Best Visual Artist (chosen from submissions to the
Bobcat Family Art Show), Best Solo Performance and Best Group Performance.

“This is a great opportunity to honor the talented men and women
who are part of our campus community,” Benedict said. “For a school
with no formal performance arts academic program, we have a lot of
talent in our student body. This is an event not to miss.”

“Debut” is free to UC Merced students with valid ID; general
admission is $8. For information:
