Enroll in Summer Session to Get Ahead

Summer is a great time to play catch-up. Homeowners often embark on improvement projects, and students often take the opportunity to make up credits or get ahead academically.

For the past few years, UC Merced’s
Summer Sessionprogram has been committed to making the campus a convenient place for current and prospective students - and community members, too - to continue to tryout research-focused courses here in the San Joaquin Valley.

Summer session is an exciting time for students and the community. It’s the one time when UC Merced classes are open to almost anyone regardless of academic experience, said Associate Registrar Steve Noret. That means students from any UC campus, members of the general public and even qualified high school students can experience UC Merced for a summer.

It’s a great time for anyone to take a UC class and to see what our campus is all about, Noret said.

Summer Session students wanting an immersive university experience are encouraged to apply for on-campus housing, which is being offered for the second consecutive year. Prospective students can apply online for summer housing beginning April 1 at housing.ucmerced.edu.

According to Leslie Santos, director of
housing and residence life, summer school students will live in the Valley Terraces. Valley Terraces are the two- and three-bedroom apartment-like suites with a common living room and spacious bathroom. As an incentive to sign up sooner rather than later, the university is offering a deal to early birds.

The first 50 students who apply and pay their $150 reservation fee will get a double-occupancy room all to themselves, Santos said. That means more space and more privacy in a shared suite.

Students opting to live on campus will get an eight-week contract for $2,628, which includes the price of the room, meals at the
Yablokoff-Wallace Dining Center, utilities (except telephone service), cable television, high-speed Internet, activities and 24-hour access to staff in case of emergencies.

Registration for Summer Session courses will continue until classes begin on June 16. Students are encouraged to register early because classes fill up quickly.

Summer session classes are open to anyone at least 18 years old, though high school juniors may also enroll as long as they have a letter of recommendation from their school principal or counselor.
