Prospective Students Welcomed to Campus on Bobcat Day April 8

Prospective Students Welcomed to Campus on Bobcat Day April 8

Bobcat Day is on its way, and the Admissions Office has wasted no effort making the event special for students interested in attending UC Merced this fall.

Bobcat Day allows prospective students and their families to get to know UC Merced’s faculty, facilities, programs and activities. Organizers hope that those who haven’t yet decided to attend UC Merced will do so because of what they see on Bobcat Day.

But the day isn’t just for would-be students, said event coordinator Shavon English. Current students, faculty and staff are welcome to join the festivities.

There will be demonstrations, performances and plenty of surprises, said English.

This will be the second annual Bobcat Day. What makes it different? It’s on the actual campus, for one thing, English said. Last year’s Bobcat Day had to be held at Lake Yosemite, since the campus was still closed for construction.

This year will also include involvement from UC Merced’s first student clubs. Student vocalists F.L.O., a jazz orchestra and numerous dance demonstrators will perform.

Eve Delfin and Ballet Folklorico have been working for months on their dances. Delfin hopes to use the performance to exemplify positive multicultural activities on campus.

The students have worked hard for this day. It takes a lot of effort, and I’m excited for them, she said. The end product is beautiful to watch; the audience will really enjoy it.

Faculty will be also be on hand to answer questions about academics, and a student panel will fill students in on what it’s really like at UC Merced.

We also have a plush Bobcat for families to take their picture with, said English.

She expects more than 1,500 people at Bobcat Day but says it’s possible that attendance may even eclipse last year’s turnout of 2,000. Even better, more information is available than before, thanks to the campus community.

Everybody who could participate this year has joined in, from staff to students, she said.

Bobcat Day will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 8, at the UC Merced campus. Prospective students who cannot attend Bobcat Day are strongly urged to schedule a campus visit; click
