As a new and growing university, UC Merced faces plentiful and exciting changes in its first several years. One of the first and biggest of these will be the selection of a new chancellor to succeed Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, the first female founding chancellor of a major research university in the United States.
Any institution navigating major change must rely on and provide good information. UC Merced aims to provide that information regarding the chancellor search process through the new Chancellor’s Web Site at http://chancellor.ucmerced.edu.
Visitors to the new Chancellor’s Web Site will find the most up-to-date news on the search for Tomlinson-Keasey’s successor – for example, the recent announcement of the selection of the search committee by the UC Office of the President and news of the committee’s visit to campus coming up June 27, 2006.
Documenting Tomlinson-Keasey’s term as chancellor, the site includes current and historical information about her tenure at UC Merced as well as a photo gallery, a news archive of internal and external stories, biographical information, and contact information for individuals employed by the chancellor’s office.
When a new chancellor comes on board at UC Merced, the Chancellor’s Web Site will be changed to include his or her information.
Tomlinson-Keasey oversaw the planning and construction of UC Merced for the UC Office of the President beginning in 1997 and was formally inaugurated as chancellor in 2002 at the time of the groundbreaking for the new campus. She announced her plans to leave the chancellor’s office in March 2006 and will step down August 30 to return to teaching and scholarship. She is a distinguished researcher in developmental psychology.
After a year-long sabbatical, during which she will chronicle the history of the institution she founded, she plans to join the faculty of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts at UC Merced.
