We Are Family: Making Memories at UC Merced's First Family Weekend

UC Merced’s first annual Family Weekend, October 21 -; 23, 2005, provides an opportunity for the families of current students to see the campus, attend a variety of programs and create memories together.

Just as our first students are now part of the history of UC Merced, the campus will form an important chapter in the story of their lives and their families’ lives, says Jane Lawrence, vice chancellor for student affairs. This weekend will give family members a taste of what students experience academically and socially here at UC Merced.

A Parent Gala will welcome families to campus Friday evening. After a chance to enjoy dinner on their own, families can return for a movie on campus or spend the evening exploring the Merced area.

Saturday’s events include an organizational meeting for the UC Merced Parent Association, Li’l Bobcat activities for children ages 3 to 10, seminars on supporting college students, lunch with faculty members, and academic open houses. Later in the afternoon, Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey will hold a Town Hall meeting and then present the first UC Merced Family of the Year Award. In the evening, students will entertain their families in the UC Merced Idol competition.

The weekend officially ends with a farewell brunch Sunday morning, Many positive memories will be made as parents, family members and UC Merced students continue to shape the Bobcat experience.
