Applications Accepted for Fall 2006

November 1, 2005
Priority Application Filing Period for Freshman and Transfer Admission is Nov. 1-30

MERCED, Calif. — Today kicks off a red-letter month for students with their eyes focused on attending the University of California, Merced next year. Students aspiring to gain freshman or transfer admission for the Fall 2006 semester are strongly encouraged to submit the University of California's Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, 2005 for priority consideration.

“We're excited about our second year of undergraduate admissions and our staff members have been all around the state to share details about what UC Merced has to offer,” said Encarnación Ruíz, director of the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools and Colleges. “The best general advice I can offer is that students give themselves plenty of time to complete the application and personal statement by starting early. Also, students should become familiar with the financial aid process and the types of financial resources that are available to help them pay for their college education.”

For Fall 2006, UC Merced will again guarantee a freshman spot for every student who achieves Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) and completes the examinations and A-G high school courses required by the UC system. ELC is the designation for students identified by UC as being in the top 4 percent of their school's graduating class.

What has changed for the 2006-07 academic year are the entrance exams freshman applicants must take and should complete by December of their senior year in high school. Tests required for UC eligibility are the SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing and two SAT Subject exams in different subject areas.

“We want students to submit successful applications, and our admissions staff is ready to help them navigate the process,” Ruíz said. “If students have questions about eligibility requirements, need assistance with the application or are trying to figure out how to make a UC education affordable, they are encouraged to contact our office as soon as possible.”

Among the services offered by the admissions office are application workshops, one-on-one counseling and transfer advising at community college. To ensure access, the admissions office can provide a paper application for students unable to download the online version and help arrange an application fee waiver for financially qualified students.

Students interested in determining their eligibility also are invited to attend the “Pathways to UC Merced” pre-admissions conference and an informational campus tour this Saturday, Nov. 5. To make a reservation, students are requested to call (866) 270-7301 toll free or (209) 724-6994. By calling for a reservation, tours also are available on a regular basis for schools and families seeking a first-hand look at the campus.

On-time applicants for freshman admission will be notified of their admission decision between March 1 and March 31, 2006, while on-time transfer applicants receive notification between March 1 and April 30, 2006.

Through Jan, 15, 2006, the campus also is accepting applications from students pursuing Fall 2006 admission for graduate study. Individual graduate programs featuring several emphasis tracks are available at the master's and doctoral degree levels. Students applying to the UC Merced Graduate Division will be advised of their admission decision by the middle of February 2006.

Emphasizing interdisciplinary scholarship, UC Merced offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs with concentrations in popular and emerging subjects through the Schools of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts; Natural Sciences; and Engineering. New for the 2006-07 academic year are majors in chemical sciences, materials science and engineering, mathematical sciences, mechanical engineering and physics.
