UC Merced Names New Director of Communications

The University of California, Merced announced today (May 12, 2004) the appointment of Patti Waid as Director of Communications for the campus. Waid served as Senior Public Information Representative and deputy for former Director James Grant before assuming his responsibilities on an interim basis as of October 2003.

“Patti Waid brings to this role extensive experience in public relations, a dedication to education and an understanding of the diverse San Joaquin Valley region,” said Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Esteban Soriano. “We are fortunate to have her as a key member of the UC Merced team.”

As Director of Communications, Waid will continue acting as spokesperson for the campus and have overall responsibility for media relations, internal and constituent communications, electronic communications, publications, graphic design and photography. Fluent in Spanish, she has been instrumental in helping UC Merced engage the region's Spanish-speaking population and expand relations with Spanish-language media.

She also serves as a member of the UC Merced Chancellor's cabinet.

Before coming to UC Merced in 2001, Waid directed communications for a private construction materials firm in Madera and was an elementary school teacher in Davis. She also has worked abroad in Europe, including a stint managing public relations, media relations and interpretation for the 1992 World Exposition in Spain.

Waid grew up in Fresno and received her B.A. degree from California State University, Fresno.

Her new position became effective as of May 1, 2004.
