Merced, CA - The University of California, Merced today announced an upcoming workshop to educate San Joaquin Valley contractors and vendors about future business opportunities at the University.
The workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at sites in Merced, Fresno, and Bakersfield, and will be sponsored by UC Merced Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey and California Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante.
Topics of discussion will include: Services needed by UC Merced, campus construction and contracting, University of California business services and procurement, and the likely economic impact of UC Merced on the San Joaquin Valley.
Expected to open in 2004 for an initial 1,000 students, the UC Merced will in subsequent years and decades grow to be a vibrant campus for 25,000 students and approximately 6,000 faculty and staff. In addition to its main location in Merced, the campus will utilize digital technology to create an educational network that serves students and communities throughout the Central Valley. The University currently operates educational centers in Bakersfield, Fresno, and Merced. Another center is planned for Modesto.
The business opportunity workshop will be held live in Fresno, and by videoconference to Merced and Bakersfield. The workshop addresses are as follows: Fresno – UC Fresno Center, 550 E. Shaw Avenue; Bakersfield – Kern County Superintendent of Schools Building, 1300 17th Street, 2nd Floor; Merced – Tri-College Center, G Street at Cormorant [north of Yosemite Avenue].

UC Merced currently employs approximately 90 educators and professionals.
