The Physical Collection
The University of California Merced Library is building a physical collection to serve the needs of UC Merced students, faculty and staff. While the bulk of this physical collection is in the form of books that relate to the opening-day majors offered by UC Merced, it also includes classic works of literature, core works from a number of academic disciplines, materials relating to California’s Central Valley and materials in other formats such as audio and video discs, and manuscripts.

The books and other materials found on the shelves of UC Merced’s Kolligian Library are just the tip of the iceberg. UC Merced students, faculty and staff can use the Melvyl Request feature to borrow any of the approximately 34 million volumes owned by libraries on the nine other UC campuses. Books (and other items) requested via Melvyl often arrive via next-day delivery.

Online Collections
The backbone of the UC Merced Library’s online collection of journals, books, databases and other resources is the California Digital Library (CDL). A collaborative effort of the ten campuses of the University of California, the CDL focuses on digital materials and services and is responsible for the design, creation and implementation of systems that support the shared collections of the University of California.

Digital Collections
The UC Merced Library is creating new digital collections that contribute to the wealth of knowledge available to scholars and students throughout California and the world. The first such undertaking is the digitization of Japanese fine art from the collection of the Lee Institute for Japanese Art in Hanford, California. This project is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
