Jessica Trounstine studies local politics, usually at the municipal level. Her research interests include what factors allow government leaders to remain in power, why some counties elect people in one party to represent them at the local level and why they elect people from another party to represent them in federal government and what politically divides voters at the local level.

Her book , “Political Monopolies in American Cities: The Rise and Fall of Bosses and Reformers,” won the 2008 Best Book in Urban Politics, awarded by the Urban Politics Section of The American Political Science Association.
