Professor Whalley's research focuses on the economics of the public sector. In recent work, he has studied:

  • The impacts of research universities on local economic development
  • How transportation infrastructure affects air quality
  • The effects of public official accountability on their performance

Alex Whalley is one of the nations few experts on the economics of higher education. He recently published findings on how college rankings affect the amount of money states allocate toward public universities. Currently, he’s beginning research into how the presence of universities affects the economy of the communities where they reside.
